10 Steps to Developing Critical Leadership Competencies


The latest research from the CIPD magazine ‘People Management’ reveals the following statistics for the critical leadership skills needed in the UK over the next 3 years:


  • Driving and Managing Change 69%
  • Making Difficult Decisions 34%
  • Executing Organisational Strategy 32%
  • Identifying and Developing Future Talent 28%
  • Building Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty 27%

Whilst I don’t think that these competencies are necessarily surprising in themselves, what it does demonstrate yet again, is that the key leadership competencies are all capable of being developed in situ. This is important to business success, since it moves us away from the ‘leaders are born not bred’ point of view, and into a recognition that effective L and D interventions can have a positive impact on developing the critical competencies of your leaders.

So, what to do with this knowledge:


  1. Get together a group of respected leaders from all levels/parts of the organisation
  2. Add a competent HR leader (one with a business head)
  3. Brainstorm the critical leadership competencies needed for success in your business
  4. Select the top 10
  5. Put them in priority order
  6. Produce a tight definition of each
  7. Produce examples of how a leader would be behaving if they were exhibiting these critical competencies (and vice versa)
  8. Communicate and explain
  9. Make sure senior leaders are ‘walking the talk’
  10. Embed in all key HR processes including R and S, induction, L and D, succession planning, performance reviews

Remember: “If you always do what you have always done – then you will always get what you have always got”.

And in the current economic situation this simply is not good enough!
